1. Should we all match?
Not necessarily. The key is to coordinate. Choose a color scheme that will work for the setting. A minimalist studio portrait might call for everyone in black, for instance, while for an outdoor family portrait you might choose blues and tans. Most families are avoiding matchy-matchy clothing these days but work with your photographer to find the best clothing for your session.
2. What are the best colors to wear for family portraits?
Blues and grays are always a good choice because they provide a nice contrast with warm skin tones. Neutrals like tan and white can also work well. Just be sure to have several people in white if you decide to go that direction because one person in white while everyone else is wearing darker colors will make that person stand out. Avoid really bright distracting colors, particularly bright red or hot pink. The cheat sheet has yellow, blue and purple on the "naughty list" but as long as they are a more muted shade, they can work just fine.
3. How do I choose the right patterns?
Solid colors are always a good choice. If you do introduce pattern, go for small, subtle patterns. Wide black and white stripes, for example, are not the best.
4.What is the best style of clothing for portraits?
There is no universal answer to this question. Tuxedos and formals can make for a stunning portrait. Here in Oregon (Salem, Corvallis, Albany, and beyond) many people choose a more casual vibe and nature inspired family sessions. Slacks, jeans, or long flowy skirts are great because they allow you to sit on the ground gracefully. Sleeveless tops can be great if you have toned arms but 3/4 and long sleeves work well on everybody. Short sleeves are generally not preferred. Your feet are going to show in some of the images so try to wear shoes that are dark and neutral.
5.If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.
It is really important that the women in the portrait like the way they look in whatever outfit they wear so I always suggest that when planning the clothing, start with the mom. She should try on the outfit and take a good look in a full length mirror. We women can be hard on ourselves so don't tear yourself down but does this outfit make you feel like yourself? Does it make you feel pretty?
6.How do our outfits fit our home decor?
You are going to want to display these portraits on your walls so take a moment to look around your home and think about the vibe you are going for. Think about the colors that would work best.
